What it's for
Signal grades people against role-based benchmarks: an Account Manager is expected to manage a certain book, a Strategist to generate a certain revenue per employee, and client-facing roles to hold a retention percentage.
Those benchmarks are maintained by the People team in a spreadsheet. Employees and their job titles live in Nova. Nothing connects the two automatically — job titles are messy ("Sr. Paid Media Strategist, B2B" versus "Paid Advertising Strategist") — and an unmatched title means that person silently has no target at all and quietly drops out of every performance view.
This page fixes that. It shows the benchmark for each role, how many real employees matched it, what percentage of the org is covered, and which job titles couldn't be matched.
What you'll see
The roles table — job title, RPE target, MRR target, retention target, and how many employees matched.
A KPI Type pill on each role: MRR (book-of-business roles), RPE (delivery roles), or Excluded (real roles that legitimately carry no revenue target, like leadership or project management).
A coverage bar — "X of Y assigned employees have KPI targets", split into MRR, RPE and no-target.
An unresolved titles list — expandable. Each entry is a job title held by a real person that Signal can't match to a benchmark.
A last-synced timestamp, and a Re-sync Matches button.
Search, sort, column choices and CSV export.
How to use it
Publish new benchmarks. The People team revises a target in their sheet. You open this page and click Re-sync Matches. The new numbers overwrite Signal's working copy, and every performance view starts grading against the new bar immediately.
Audit coverage before a review cycle. Check the coverage bar before leadership pulls capacity or performance numbers. If coverage has slipped — new hires, re-titles — those people are silently missing from target-versus-actual views. The question is: is this data complete enough to run reviews on?
Chase down unresolved titles. Expand the list. Each one is a real person without a target. The fix happens outside this screen: either the People team adds the role to their sheet, or the title mapping needs updating by the Signal team. Then re-sync and confirm the entry disappears.
Settle "what should this person be hitting?" Search the job title. You get the authoritative numbers, which role the title matched, and when it was last synced.
Sanity-check after a sync. The MRR / RPE / Excluded counts show the shape of the org. A sudden skew right after a sync is an early warning that matching went wrong.
What you can change
One thing: the Re-sync Matches button. It pulls current targets from the People-team sheet, pulls the current roster and job titles from Nova, matches every title, updates the coverage figures, and refreshes what every other page reads.
The same sync also runs automatically about half a minute after every backend deployment, so it self-heals without anyone clicking anything.
You cannot edit a target number here. Targets are only editable at their source — the People-team sheet — and the title mapping is only editable by the Signal team. That's deliberate: one source of truth, no side-channel edits.
Good to know
Matching is strict. Only job titles explicitly on the curated list get targets. There's no fuzzy fallback and no automatic role creation, so an unfamiliar title genuinely produces no target rather than a guess.
Fixing an unresolved title isn't self-service. It needs either a People-team sheet addition or a change by the Signal team. Then a re-sync.
Right after a deployment the coverage bar can be empty. The automatic sync takes about half a minute. Wait and reload; if it's still empty, run the sync manually.
Two "total employees" figures appear, and they're both right. The sync banner counts everyone active with a job title. The coverage bar counts only people assigned to at least one retained client — the same population as the capacity pages, so those pages agree with these percentages.
A role can disappear from the table. Every sync removes roles that matched zero employees. If the last person holding a title leaves, the role goes on the next sync. This table is the current roster of roles, not a permanent catalogue.
Reading the sheet is heuristic. Tabs are found by name, columns by header, and the numbers are parsed out of free text like "$28K RPE, 95% retention". A reformat of the sheet can silently change what syncs, so re-check coverage after the People team restructures it.
You may hear default figures quoted — don't trust them. There are dormant default numbers in the app from an inactive code path. The authoritative numbers are whatever the sheet says, as shown here after a sync.
Common questions
How do I change a target? Not here. Have the People team edit their sheet, then click Re-sync Matches. Downstream views pick it up immediately.
Why does someone show "no target" on Employees or a capacity page? Their job title either isn't on the curated list (it'll be in the unresolved list here), is deliberately excluded as a non-KPI role, or matched a role that carries no revenue target. Unresolved titles can't be fixed from this screen.
What does Re-sync Matches actually do? Pulls targets from the sheet, pulls the roster and titles from Nova, matches every title, rewrites the match record, updates the timestamp, rebuilds coverage, and removes roles that matched nobody.
Why don't the two employee totals match? Different populations by design — see "Good to know" above.
What decides whether a role is MRR, RPE or Excluded? The targets on the role. MRR target only → MRR. RPE only → RPE. Neither → Excluded. Both → the title decides: Account Director and Account Manager titles are MRR, everything else RPE.
A role vanished from the table. Every sync removes roles with zero matched employees. It comes back when someone holds a matching title again.
The coverage bar is empty right after a deploy. Expected. The automatic sync runs about half a minute after startup.
Are the matched-employee counts live? No — they reflect the last sync, never live HR data. Re-sync to refresh.
